The Basics
Accurately animating a stringed instrument is achieved by stacking effects vertically and horizontally on the timeline and using the Display selector to show and hide different aspects of the fretboard template in conjunction with the Animation selector to determine the dots' behavior.
When you change the Animation selector from “OFF” to one of the other presets in the FretBoard menu, it's like putting a car in gear. Every dot on the FretBoard template is now engaged and affected by the animation preset you choose. By dragging the dots from the template area into the fretboard area, you decide which dots will be visible to your audience and which dots won’t.
If you choose the default animation preset “Step”, the dots will light up in consecutive order for 1/3 sec each from 1 to 16. The numbered dots allow you to build your sequence with the animation selector turned “OFF” so when you have finished building your sequence you can audition the different animation presets to see which one suits your composition the best.
For a simple C major scale, you could drag the 1st Beat dot to the C position on the fretboard, the 2nd Beat dot to the D position on the fretboard, the 3rd Beat dot to the E position on the fretboard and so on. Press Play on your keyboard and you will see the animated playhead strip step advance from 1 to 16. The dots will not animate (fade, turn on and off, etc.) until you choose an animation preset. This is the core to understanding FretBoard.

90 BPM🔒 FretBoard effects
The Fixed 90 BPM🔒 FretBoard effect is the perfect choice for illustrating a musical phrase if you're not matching to a live audio clip. It can be easier to work with than it's Vari-Speed counterpart because if you want to reduce the amount of notes in the clip you just need to reduce its length. If you are teaching simple scales and chord progressions to your students consider recording at 90 BPM. You will always have the option to invoke the Final Cut Pro compound clip / re-time feature to adjust the timing later.
Vari-Speed FretBoard Effects
A Vari-Speed FretBoard effect can be matched to 16 beats of an audio clip by just adjusting the length of the FretBoard affect so it lines up with 16 beats of the audio. The Vari-Speed FretBoard effect will always be 16 beats irregardless of its extended or reduced length on the FCP timeline as long as it contains at least 16 frames. Cut a Vari-Speed FretBoard effect into 4 pieces and you will find each section still contains 16 beats. At the default length, the FretBoard beats are 1/3 sec apart. Which is equivalent to 90 BPM on a metronome. To change the speed or BPM of the animated dots, just increase or decrease the length of the Vari-Speed FretBoard effect.
Bender and Vibrato

The natural bending of the strings and vibrato is achieved by dragging the on screen controls for the Bender dots into the fretboard area. Drag the onscreen control to the fret you plan to bend the string and use the angle wand to change the colour and label of the dot. Animate the bend by keyframing the X+Y parameters in the fretboard menu. In the fretboard menu under Vibrato, choose the timing and amount of vibrato to apply to the string. You can illustrate almost anything on a fretboard by just keyframing the Open String, Bender, Vibrato and Strips parameters. Keep in mind the onscreen controls for the Bender dots need to be on the fretboard in order for the bender and vibrato to work.
In a nutshell, mastering FretBoard revolves around two key concepts: "when" and "where”. With just one action of dragging notes to the fretboard, you have the power to control both aspects. By selecting a note from any of the 1-16 time slots, you can determine its position on the fretboard and precisely when it appears in your music.

Strummer Final Cut Pro Plug-In - User Guide
Strummer is a versatile, user-friendly, and highly customizable

With an extensive library of fonts, symbols, and emojis at your disposal, Strummer empowers you to dazzle your audience with eye-catching visuals. You can easily represent up and down strumming strokes of stringed instruments like the guitar using a 4x8 or 4x16 grid, aligning them with different timing intervals within an 8 or 16-beat section of music. With a single click, the 4-pattern grid is consolidated into one row, offering a visual representation of the complete strumming pattern. Display this alongside the additional bar counter to precisely indicate the up and down strokes within a 2 or 4-bar measure of music. Drag the 8 or 16-beat Strummer clip onto the FCP timeline, matching it with the source clip's beats, and watch as the animated strums land perfectly on the beat, delivering impressive results swiftly and effortlessly.

FretBoard wasn't formed in isolation. It was a collaborative effort and it's ongoing!
Did you know there are 5 different ways you can play piano middle C on an acoustic guitar? • String 2, fret 1. • String 3, fret 5. • String 4, fret 10. • String 5, fret 15. • String 6, fret 20.
If you consider the complexity of a stringed instrument, where the same note on a piano shows up in 5 different places on a guitar, animating a fretboard is a whole different ball game than animating a keyboard. You have strings that bend, notes that slide, and a player/viewer perspective to contend with as well.
We did our best to make FretBoard as intuitive and responsive as possible with the focus on seamlessly integrating into your FCPX workflow.
