Random Crop

Displays a sequence of randomly cropped regions of your source video, creating smooth transitions between each frame.

As with any plugin whose effects and animation are controlled randomly, if you are not happy with the current output look to the Seed parameter under the Animation group. Any time you assign a new seed, a different set of random choices is made.

Compatibility

Random Crop is compatible with Final Cut Pro, Motion, Premiere Pro, After Effects and DaVinci Resolve.

Parameters

Presets

Presets contain a snapshot of your effect configuration. 50 built-in presets are available.

When you save parameter configuration to a file on disk, this file can later be loaded to recreate the same effect configuration. Presets generated in one video application can be used by the same plug-in running in a different video application.

Working with the Presets Browser

Pause (secs)

Duration in seconds that the animation will pause on each randomly-selected region, before animating to the next. A separate parameter can be used to specify the duration of this transition. When this parameter has a value of 0 seconds, the effect is constantly transitioning from one randomly-selected region to the next.

Aspect Ratio

Allows you to lock the aspect ratio of each randomly selected region to a specific metric.

The following options are available:

Width

Defines the lower and upper bounds for the width of each randomly selected region. The range is expressed as a percentage of the frame. For example, if the lower bound is 20% and the upper bound is 80%, a random width for an HD frame (1920 pixels wide) will be chosen between 384 and 1536 pixels.

If you are unhappy with the sequence of randomly-selected regions, assign a new value to the Seed parameter under the Animation section. Each seed produces a unique, but reproducible sequence of random dimensions.

Height

Defines the lower and upper bounds for the height of each randomly selected region.

This range is only available when the Aspect Ratio parameter is set to Random, which allows the height of each randomly selected region to be arbitrarily chosen.

Rounded Corners

Controls the roundness of each randomly selected region. This parameter is only available when no custom mask has been assigned to the region.

Softness

Softens the borders of each randomly selected region. When using a custom mask is used, this parameter blurs the shape defined by any title or graphic in use by the mask.

Transition

Transition (secs)

Duration of each transition between the current region and the next. Set this parameter to 0 to turn off all transitions.

Transition

Allows you to pick which effect is used to transition from one random region to the next.

The following options are available:

Push Direction

Determines the direction in which the current region moves off the screen, when the current Transition effect is set to Push.

Push Gap

Determines the distance between two regions, as one moves off the screen and another moves into the frame. Applicable only when the current Transition effect is set to Push.

Flip Direction

Determines the direction in which the current region is flipped, when the current Transition effect is set to Flip.

Flip Alternate

When enabled, the direction of the Flip animation alternates at each frame.

Cube Direction

Determines the direction in which the current region is rotated in 3D when the current Transition effect is set to Cube.

Cube Alternate

When enabled, the direction of the Cube rotation alternates at each frame.

Transition Curve

Determines the smoothness of the transition effect.

Transition Exposure

Determines the over- or under-exposure applied to the output as the transition reaches its peak.

Transition Scale

Determines the maximum scaling factor applied to each region as the transition animates from one to another. The outgoing region is scaled up or down to the value defined by this parameter. The incoming region is scaled from the value assigned to this parameter down to 100%.

Transition Blur

Determines the maximum blur applied to each region as the transition animates from one to another. The outgoing region is blurred up to the value defined by this parameter. The incoming region goes from blurred to not being blurred as the transition completes.

Transition Blur Type

Allows you to choose which blurring technique is applied during the transition.

Shape

The following options are available:

Star Points

Controls the number of points in the star. This parameter is only available when Shape is set to Star.

Star Angle

Controls the orientation of the star, and it is animatable through controls in the Animation group. This parameter is only available when Shape is set to Star.

Star Scale

Controls the scale of the star. This parameter is only available when Shape is set to Star.

Star Point Roundness

Controls the roundness of the edge of each points the star. This parameter is only available when Shape is set to Star.

Star Point Style

The following options are available:

Controls the appearance of points in the star.

Mask Text

Allows you to enter and customize the title used to mask each randomly-selected region. This parameter is only available when Shape is set to Text.

Custom Mask

Allows you to select a black and white graphic to be used as a mask. This parameter is only available when Shape is set to Custom graphic.

White pixels in your graphic file control the visible portions of your media, black pixels control the invisibile portions.

Invert

When enabled, the visible area defined by your custom graphic is inverted.

Background

Opacity

Controls the visibility of the original media, behind the cropped regions.

If needed, you can reproduce the output of older versions of this plug-in by setting this value to 0%, hiding the background entirely.

Blur

Softens the original media, visible behind the cropped regions in the foreground.

Seed

A number that controls random aspects of the effect.

Click the New button to assign a new seed value. When the seed value is changed, the effect uses a different random sequence to produce a different output.

Edit the existing value to manually assign a seed number. This may help you replicate a particular sequence of random events. In Final Cut Pro and Motion, hold down the Option ⌥ key to access the Edit button in the inspector.

Motion Blur

Motion Blur

Enables motion blur at different quality settings. The higher the quality, the more samples are used. Multiple samples are blended together to produce a single frame of output.

Shutter Angle and Offset

The Shutter Angle slider controls the size (aperture) of the shutter used to simulate motion blur. The size of the shutter determines how long light is allowed to pass through the lens. The angle is set to 180° by default. A shutter angle of 360° means that samples are collected for the entire duration of the frame.
Setting a value of zero means that you want the shutter to collect light only once, which is equivalent to turning motion blur off.

The Shutter Offset slider controls the moment in time when the shutter opens and closes, relative to the duration of the frame. The offset is set to 0 by default. An offset of zero means the shutter is perfectly centered over the moment in time when the frame occurs. The shutter is therefore open an equal amount of time before and after the current frame occurs.

The Shutter Angle and Shutter Offset parameters are only available when motion blur is enabled.

Channel Mixer

This section allows you to limit the effect to specific channels, leaving others unmodified.
