Photo Montage 4

Photo Montage creates photo and video sequence animations from a list of files. It combines effects, transitions and pan and zoom animations driven by AI to produce dynamic video content from still images and clips.

Photo Montage now supports video clips in addition to photos. The two types of media can be transparently mixed, rearranged and cropped.

The rendering engine moves beyond Wide Gamut HDR to support perceptual color operations. From effects to gradients, enjoy a superior, more natural output that comes from blending colors in the Oklab color space.

Customizable Pan and Zoom

Integrated AI allows pan and zoom animations to automatically identify the prominent regions in your photos and videos. The results are beautiful, natural and require no configuration. But what if the AI isn’t detecting the correct subject? What if you need to animate between specific regions? New in this version, you can assign custom regions for the pan and zoom animation:

Easy Cropping

Cropping photos no longer requires a trip to a separate app, nor does it require maintaining multiple copies of your assets. The image configuration window now allows you to easily, non-destructively select a region of your photos or videos to be displayed:

The same photo or video can appear multiple times within the same image sequence, each time with a different crop region.

New and Improved Effects and Transitions

Multiple transitions can be used within the same sequence of photos and videos. A new Radial Dissolve transition joins the set:

Select a specific transition or let the plug-in choose one at random. The new Scanlines effect is perfectly tailored to create vintage, analog TV looks compatible with perceptual color blending.

New Backgrounds

Simple gradients have been enhanced to support banding-free output, and joined by Wormhole and Nebula. These are brand-new procedural background generators that shine in combination with enhanced blend modes.

Compatibility

Photo Montage 4 is compatible with Final Cut Pro, Motion, Premiere, After Effects and DaVinci Resolve.

Parameters

Presets

Presets contain a snapshot of your effect configuration. 160 built-in presets are available.

When you save parameter configuration to a file on disk, this file can later be loaded to recreate the same effect configuration. Presets generated in one video application can be used by the same plug-in running in a different video application.

Media

Media

Lets you configure a list of image and movie files.

Click the Select button to populate the list through a configuration window. The window allows you to add, remove and rearrange image and movie files. The effect processes your files in the same order in which they appear in the list.

The configuration window also provides shortcuts to edit each file using a separate application or reveal its location in the Finder. If a file is reported as missing, as when its path on disk has changed, click the Relink button to specify its new location.

For the best performance when working with videos, make sure they are encoded in ProRes.

Photo Montage will transparently adapt videos of any resolution and frame rate to the resolution and frame rate of your timeline. Doing so is an expensive operation when performed on video clips encoded for delivery (H.264/H.264/HEVC) as opposed to videos encoded for faster editing (all variants of ProRes).

Duration (secs)

Set to 1 by default.

The slider is limited to values between 0 and 60 but you can type values between 0 and +∞ by clicking on the current value in the inspector and typing the desired value in. Some video applications also allow you to click and drag the value beyond the range accessible through the slider.

This parameter defines how many seconds each image or clip remains visible before the transition to the next image begins.

The same duration is used for all images and clips, unless it has been customized via the configuration window:

If the requested duration exceeds the length of a video clip, the animation will freeze on the last frame for as long as needed. To avoid this behavior, customize the playback range through the configuration window. You can easily trim the clip to display only the desired frames.

Geometry

Parameters in this group let you control the initial location, scale, and angle for each image, and allow you to enable Pan and Zoom animations and randomized geometry to create engaging animations, automatically.

Presets

Presets saved and applied through this parameter affect only to parameters within the Geometry group. 22 built-in presets are available.

Working with the Presets Menu

Scale To

The following options are available:

Controls the default placement of all images in the sequence. You can override this behavior via the configuration window.

Scale

Set to 0.7 by default. Only values between 0 and 2 are allowed.

This is the default scale factor for every image in the sequence. You can customize the scale on a per-image bases through the configuration window.

A value of 1.0 means that the image is scaled to have the same dimensions of the frame. The Scale To parameter also affects the scale factor, since images do not necessarily share the same aspect ratio of your timeline.

For example, when this parameter is set to 1.0 and the Scale To parameter is set to Fill, the image is scaled so as to cover the entire frame, but some of its content may be cropped.

When the value is 1.0 and the Scale To parameter is set to Fit, some pillarboxing or letterboxing may occur:

Please note that other parameters in this group also affect the dimensions of each image. Automatic Pan and Zoom and randomized geometry alter the location, angle and scale of each image as part of their animation.

Position

A point parameter centered in the frame by default.

While it is possible to change the X and Y coordinates via the inspector, it is far easier to interact with point parameters directly on-screen:

The initial location of each image within the frame. The location defined by this parameter is subject to change over time if automatic Pan and Zoom and randomized geometry are enabled.

Rotation

Angle set to by default.

The same initial angle is applied to each image after all scaling operations have occurred. The angle defined by this parameter is subject to change over time if automatic Pan and Zoom and randomized geometry are enabled.

3D Axis

Angle set to by default.

Defines an axis on the 2D plane used as the basis for a rotation in 3D space.

Images are rotated in 3D space according to this 3D Axis and 3D Angle parameters. For example, when this parameter is set to and 3D Angle is set to 45˚, the result is a 3D rotation of 45˚ around the X axis.

This particular way to represent 3D rotations is more suitable to automatic animations. When image geometry is randomized, the 3D Axis is chosen at random between 0˚ and 360˚, while the rotation can be controlled by picking 3D Angle values within a certain range.

This parameter is not available when Randomize is on. In that case, a random angle is chosen over the entire possible range.

As for all randomized aspects of the output, you can force a new set of choices by assigning a new Seed parameter value under the Advanced group.

3D Angle

Set to by default.

Controls the 3D rotation around the axis defined by the 3D Axis parameter.

Pan and Zoom

Zoom

The following options are available:

Controls Pan and Zoom animations that employ modern AI techniques to automatically discover the prominent subjects in your images and build animations to/from these regions.

Amount

Set to 50% by default.

Controls the overall range of zooming that happens as part of an automatic Pan and Zoom animation. At 100%, the animation produces the most dramatic effect as it zooms fully in or out of the prominent subjects in the image.

Randomization

Randomize

On by default.

Allows you to randomize every aspect of the image geometry in order to produce a more interesting animation that doesn’t require any keyframes.
As for all randomized aspects of the output, you can force a new set of choices by assigning a new Seed parameter value under the Advanced group.

Randomize 3D Axis

Off by default.

Min Scale Change

Set to -0.05 by default. Only values between -1 and 1 are allowed.

This is the lower bound for random changes to the value of the Scale parameter.

A value of -0.1 means that each image will at most be scaled down by 10%, relative to the frame size.

Max Scale Change

Set to 0.05 by default. Only values between -1 and 1 are allowed.

This is the upper bound for random changes to the value of the Scale parameter.

A value of 0.1 means that each image will at most be scaled up by 10%, relative to the frame size.

Min X Change

Set to -0.02 by default. Only values between -1 and 1 are allowed.

This is the lower bound for random changes to the X coordinate of the Position parameter.

A value of -0.02 means that each image may be moved left at random by no more than 2% of the overall size of the frame.

Max X Change

Set to 0.02 by default. Only values between -1 and 1 are allowed.

This is the upper bound for random changes to the X coordinate of the Position parameter.

A value of 0.02 means that each image may be moved right at random by no more than 2% of the overall size of the frame.

Min Y Change

Set to -0.01 by default. Only values between -1 and 1 are allowed.

This is the lower bound for random changes to the Y coordinate of the Position parameter.

A value of -0.02 means that each image may be moved down at random by no more than 2% of the overall size of the frame.

Max Y Change

Set to 0.01 by default. Only values between -1 and 1 are allowed.

This is the upper bound for random changes to the Y coordinate of the Position parameter.

A value of 0.02 means that each image may be moved down at random by no more than 2% of the overall size of the frame.

Min Rotation Change

Angle set to -5° by default.

This is the lower bound for random changes to the value of the Rotation parameter.

A value of -5 means that each image may be rotated clockwise at random by no more than 5 degrees.

Max Rotation Change

Angle set to by default.

This is the upper bound for random changes to the value of the Rotation parameter.

A value of 5 means that each image may be rotated counter-clockwise at random by no more than 5 degrees.

Min 3D Angle Change

Set to -5° by default.

This is the lower bound for random changes to the value of the 3D Angle parameter.

Max 3D Angle Change

Set to -25° by default.

This is the upper bound for random changes to the value of the 3D Angle parameter.

Animation

Animate Scale

On by default.

When enabled, image scale animates from its assigned value to its randomized value.

Since the animation progresses to or from a randomized scale, this option is only available when Randomize is on.

Animate Rotation

On by default.

When enabled, the image angle animates from its assigned value to its randomized value.

Since the animation progresses to or from a randomized angle, this option is only available when Randomize is on.

Animate 3D Angle

On by default.

Animate X

On by default.

When enabled, the X coordinate of each image animates from its assigned value to its randomized value.

Since the animation progresses to or from a randomized coordinate, this option is only available when Randomize is on.

Animate Y

On by default.

When enabled, the Y coordinate of each image animates from its assigned value to its randomized value.

Since the animation progresses to or from a randomized coordinate, this option is only available when Randomize is on.

Animate When?

The following options are available:

If any of the image geometry parameters are being animated either through pan and Zzom or geometry randomization, this parameter lets you control when the animation occurs.

Animate How?

The following options are available:

Geometry is animated by interpolating between two sets of values: the fixed values defined by the Scale, Angle and Position parameters, and the values picked at random by the plug-in.

This parameter lets you decide whether geometry is animated from fixed to random geometry, or viceversa.

Keep in mind that geometry may also be simultaneously affected by a pan and zoom effect, as decided by the Zoom parameter.

Easing

The following options are available:

Controls how the animation progresses over time.

Border

Parameters in this group let you add and customize borders.

There are complex interactions between various parameters. A border will be visible when:

  • Uniform Border is on and you assign a non-zero Border parameter value.
  • Uniform Border is off and you assign a non-zero border to at least one of the four edges of the image.
  • Border Fade is set to a value higher than 0%. As colors fade towards the edges, they reveal a border.
When a border is visible, its color is determined by the Border Fill parameter. When the Adaptive Color option is chosen, the border color is computed for each image by analyzing its content and finding its average tint. You can then lighten or darken this tint through the Adaptive Brightness parameter.

You should also be aware of subtle differences between Border Fade and Vignette. Fading colors reveals your current border color, whereas a vignette always darkens edges of your photograph. Fading and vignetting can be combined to simulate a number of print or lens-based techniques.

Rounded Corners

Set to 2% by default.

Adds rounded corners to each image. A value of 0 disables rounded corners.

Uniform Border

On by default.

When enabled, borders have the same thickness all around the image. A single Border parameter lets you control that thickness.

Border

Set to 2% by default.

Determines the thickness of image borders. The size is relative to the output frame.

Left

Set to 0% by default.

Controls the thickness of the border on the left edge of each image.

This parameter is only available when Uniform Border is off.

Right

Set to 0% by default.

Controls the thickness of the border on the right edge of each image.

This parameter is only available when Uniform Border is off.

Top

Set to 0% by default.

Controls the thickness of the border on the top edge of each image.

This parameter is only available when Uniform Border is off.

Bottom

Set to 0% by default.

Controls the thickness of the border on the bottom edge of each image.

This parameter is only available when Uniform Border is off.

Sizing

The following options are available:

Controls whether the percentage you specify borders in expresses a dimension that is relative to the output of the plug-in (the video frame) or relative to the size of the image.

This behavior affects border sizing whether or not Uniform Border is enabled.

For example, if you wish to create a border on the left edge of each image that covers half of the image, you would select Relative to image and specify a Left Border of 50%

Color

Set to
black by default.

Adaptive Color

Set to 0% by default.

Controls the overall brightness of the adaptive border color.

While the Border Fill parameter allows you to enable the computation of an adaptive color, this parameter allows you to controls its brightness.

Opacity

Set to 100% by default.

Controls the opacity of the border color. The opacity affects both a solid color or an adaptive border color, depending on the current selection in the Border Fill parameter.

Blend Mode

The following options are available:

Blur Border

Applies a blur to the final contour, whether or not additional options are affecting its shape and softness already (such as Aging). It is visually different from the Outside Fade parameter because the blur affects the contour in all directions, whereas Outside Fade is a gradient.

Fading

Parameters in this group control whether the contours of each photo or video are faded. When an Inside fade is enabled, the Border Color becomes visible. When Outside fade is enabled, the contours simply become transparent.

The two effects can be combined with Border Aging:

Inside Fade

Set to 0% by default.

Controls whether the image fades in from the edges. The area is filled in with the current Border Color, and it is similarly affected by the Adaptive Color and Adaptive Brightness parameters.

An inside fade can be used to simulate aging, or to simulate printing techniques from the early days of photography.

This effect should not be confused with vignetting, which artificially controls how dark the edges appear compared to the center of the image.

Inside Softness

Controls the mathematical function used to drive the fade gradient, allowing you to create a softer or harder fade.

Uniform Outside Fade

When enabled, a single Outside Fade parameter applies the same fading to all edges of the image or video. When disabled, four separate parameters become available to control the fading amount: left, right, top and bottom.

Outside Fade

Optionally fades the image or video from the edges inward. Contrary to Inside Fade, this parameter simply causes the edges to become transparent.

Outside Softness

Controls the mathematical function used to drive the fade gradient, allowing you to create a softer or harder fade.

Aging

Aging

Set to 0% by default.

This parameter lets you simulate the effect of aging along the borders of each image. A higher value increases the amount of degradation around the edges.

The simulated aging process guarantees different results for each image. Border aging works great in combination with certain color adjustments, such as Sepia tone, available through the Effect parameter under the Image::Effects group.

Contour

The following options are available:

Controls the algorithm used to simulate aging of the border.

Smooth Contour

Set to 5% by default.

Allows you to smooth borders after the aging process has been applied.

Imperfections

Controls the shape of the random contour.

Scale X

Scales the current contour horizontally. Best suited for the Pixelated border aging style.

Scale Y

Scales the current contour vertically. Best suited for the Pixelated border aging style.

Vignette

Vignette

Off by default.

Enables a vignette effect.

Vignette Intensity

Set to 50% by default.

Controls the brightness of the areas affected by the color adjustment when Vignette is on.

Vignette Contrast

Set to 50% by default.

Controls the softness of the areas affected by the color adjustment when Vignette is on.

Less contrast provides a more gradual shift from the original image colors to the darkened areas on the edges.

Effects

Parameters in this group let you apply artistic effects and color adjustments to all images in the animation.

Effect

The following options are available:

Controls whether any particular effect is applied to all images in the sequence, or whether one of the built-in effects is chosen at random.

When choosing at random, you can control which effects to choose from by enabling the corresponding option.

Saturate

Saturate

Allow the Saturate effect to be picked at random.

Intensity

Set to 100% by default.

When the Saturate effect is applied to an image, this parameter controls the intensity of the effect.

Desaturate

Desaturate

Allow the Desaturate effect to be picked at random.

Intensity

When the Desaturate effect is applied to an image, this parameter controls the intensity of the effect.

Boost Warm

Allow the Boost Warm effect to be picked at random.

Intensity

When the Black and White effect is applied to an image, this parameter controls the intensity of the effect.

When set to 100%, all original color information is lost, and the output is purely black and white.

Sepia

Allow the Sepia effect to be picked at random.

Intensity

When the Sepia effect is applied to an image, this parameter controls the intensity of the effect.

When set to 100%, all original color information is lost, and the output is purely in sepia tone.

Duotone

Duotone

Allow the Duotone effect to be picked at random.

Duotone Color 1

51% red, 94% green, 100% blue, 100% alpha in the SRGB color space by default.
When the Duotone effect is applied to an image, this parameter controls the first of the two colors used to colorize each image.

Duotone Color 2

32% red, 6% blue, 100% alpha in the SRGB color space by default.
When the Duotone effect is applied to an image, this parameter controls the second of the two colors used to colorize each image.

Duotone Balance

Set to 50% by default.

When the Duotone effect is applied to an image, this parameter controls the balance between the two colors used to colorize the output.

Duotone Sharpness

Set to 50% by default.

When the Duotone effect is applied to an image, this parameter controls contrast between areas that are colorized using the first color compared to areas colorized using the second color.

Duotone Mix

Set to 50% by default.

When the Vibrant effect is applied to an image, this parameter controls the overall intensity of the effect.

When set to 100%, all original color information is replaced by the output of the duotone color adjustment.

Vibrant

Vibrant

Allow the Vibrant effect to be picked at random.

Intensity

Set to 100% by default.

When the Vibrant effect is applied to an image, this parameter controls the intensity of the effect.

Vibrancy is a process that only boosts color saturation for pixels that have muted colors to start with.

Vintage

Allow the Vintage effect to be picked at random.

When the Vintage effect is applied to an image, this parameter controls the intensity of the effect.

Halftone

Allow the Halftone effect to be picked at random.

Halftone Process

When the Halftone effect is applied to an image, this parameter controls the technique used.

Halftone Size

Set to 15% by default.

Controls the size of dots or lines used by the halftone process.

Halftone Angle

Set to 30° by default.

Controls the orientation of the halftone pattern as it appears in the output.

Halftone Mix

Set to 50% by default.

Controls the intensity of the current Halftone Process.

When set to 100%, all original color information is replaced by the halftone pattern.

Scanlines

Drop Shadow

Parameters in this group let you add and customize drop shadows.

Drop Shadow

On by default.

Enables a drop shadow behind each image in the sequence.

Offset X

Set to 50% by default.

Horizontal location of the drop shadow relative to the image. The offset is expressed relative to the dimensions of the frame.

Offset Y

Set to 40% by default.

Vertical location of the drop shadow relative to the image. The offset is expressed relative to the dimensions of the frame.

Radius

Set to 20% by default.

Controls the overall size and softness of the drop shadow.

Color

Set to
black with 85% alpha by default.
The color used by the drop shadow, including its opacity which may be used to control overall visibility of the drop shadows in the output. This parameter is available when Fill is set to Solid Color.

Opacity

Controls the opacity of the drop shadow, whether it is a solid color or a replica of the current image.

Scale

Allows you to scale the drop shadow up and down. This paramete is helpful when a 3D Perspective is enabled, and you wish to project a larger or smaller shadow.

Blend Mode

Controls the blend mode used to composite the drop shadow over the current background (if any is selected).

Perspective

Rotates the shadow relative to the bottom edge of the frame, so as to allow you to project it onto the imaginary floor of a 3D scene.

Transitions

Build In

On by default.

When enabled, the photo sequence animation begins by transitioning from a transparent frame to the first image in the sequence.

When turned off, the animation starts immediately by displaying the first image in the sequence.

Transition (secs)

Set to 1 by default. Only values between 0 and 60 are allowed.

This parameter defines how many seconds the transition between one image and next lasts.

Unlike the Image (secs) parameter, transition duration cannot be customized on a per-image basis. For visual consistency, a single duration is used for all transitions.

The following options are available:

Gap

Distance between one image and the next.

Shadows

Controls the visibility of shadows in the output.

Fold Outgoing

Set to 75% by default.

Controls whether the outgoing image is folded as it animates offscreen.

Unfold Incoming

Set to 75% by default.

Controls whether the incoming image is unfolded as it animates onscreen.

Blocks Dissolve

Random, square regions of one image animate to reveal the next.

Scale

Set to 10% by default.

Size of each block, relative to the current frame.

Speed

Set to 25% by default.

Speed at which each block will dissolve to reveal pixels from the next image.

Camera Flash

A transition that simulates the effect of a camera flash, whose intense light momentarily floods the scene. The transition is timed to fade from one image to the next in synch with the camera flash.

Target

The following options are available:

Controls whether light from the simulated flash floods the entire scene, or only the images.

Overexposure

Set to 50% by default.

Channel Switch

A transition that simulates the effect of switching channels on an old CRT television based on analog transmission, complete with distortions, chromatic aberrations and scanlines.

Dissolve Speed

Set to 50% by default.

Controls the speed at which the outgoing image dissolves into the next, independently of other aspects of the transition.

Dissolve Over Black

On by default.

When enabled, the images are progressively composited over a black background as the transition progresses.

This option allows for the output to more closely resemble the look of an old TV set, but it also implies that any background behind the images will be hidden during the transition.

Amount

Set to 25% by default.

Controls the strength of the distortion effect.

Randomize Amount

Set to 25% by default.

Allows the strength of the distortion to change over time.

Smoothness

Set to 95% by default.

Controls whether the edge of the distortion has sharp edges or a smooth contour.

Randomize Smoothness

Set to 0% by default.

Allows the smoothness of the contour to change over time.

Slide

Set to 0.25 by default. Only values between -1 and 1 are allowed.

Controls the direction in which the distortion pattern moves vertically.

Negative values cause the pattern to slide up, positive values cause the pattern to slide down.

Randomize Slide

Set to 25% by default.

Allows the speed and direction in which the distortion pattern slides to change over time.

Waviness

Set to 100% by default.

Controls whether the distortion causes pixels to shift left and right in wavy patterns.

Randomize Waviness

Set to 25% by default.

Allows the waviness of the distortion pattern to change over time.

Brightness

Set to -0.5 by default. Only values between -1 and 1 are allowed.

Controls the brightness adjustment applied to the image as the transition reaches its peak.

Negative values mean that the images are darkened during the transition. Positive values cause the images to brighten.

Randomize Brightness

Set to 0% by default.

Allows the brightness of the images to change over time.

Saturation

Set to -1 by default. Only values between -1 and 1 are allowed.

Controls the saturation adjustment applied to the image as the transition reaches its peak.

Negative values mean that colors are desaturated during the transition. Positive values cause colors to become saturated.

Randomize Saturation

Set to 0% by default.

Allows the saturation of colors to change over time.

Chroma

Set to 10% by default.

Shifts color channels out of alignment as the transition reaches its peak.

Randomize Chroma

Set to 0% by default.

Allows the color channel shift to change over time.

Sync Lines

Controls the visibility of extra signal information around the frame.

Under normal circumstances an old TV set based on analog transmission would not display this information. The extra content was designed to help the set synch the image vertically and horizontally, deliver captions, etc.

V-Sync Min

Set to 1 by default. Only values between -5 and 5 are allowed.

Minimum amount by which the image will lose vertical synch during the transition.

A value of 1.0 means that the image will lose vertical synch by at least one full height of the frame.

When the Allow Snapback parameter is enabled, vertical sync may also be lost for non-multiples of the frame height. For example, if the randomization causes V-Sync to be lost by 1.5, the image will slide up one and a half times before snapping back to its correct, synched position.

V-Sync Max

Set to 3 by default. Only values between -5 and 5 are allowed.

Maximum amount by which the image will lose vertical synch during the transition.

A value of 3.0 means that the image can lose vertical synch by up to 3 full heights of the frame.

H-Sync Min

Set to 0 by default. Only values between -5 and 5 are allowed.

Minimum amount by which the image will lose horizontal synch during the transition.

A value of 1.0 means that the image will lose horizontal synch by at least one full width of the frame.

Scanline Height

Controls the height of the simulated scanlines.

Scanline Contrast

Set to 75% by default.

Controls the contrast of the simulated scanlines.

This parameter has noticeable side effects only for higher values of the Scanline Height parameter

Copy Machine

A light sweeps across one image to reveal the next image, to simulate the action of an old photocopier scanning its surface.

Color

Set to

Size

Light beam size, relative to the dimensions of the frame.

Start Direction

Controls if and how the direction of the transition changes with each use.

  • Constant: the wipe always starts along the same direction, specified by the Angle parameter.
  • Increase: on its first use, the wipe starts in the direction specified by the Angle parameter. On subsequent uses, the angle is increased by the amount specified by the Increment parameter.
  • Flip: on its first use, the wipe starts in the direction specified by the Angle parameter. On subsequent uses, the angle is flipped to the opposite direction.
  • Randomize: the wipe transition starts in a random direction at every use.

Please note that the transition may change direction as it progresses. This behavior is controlled by the End Direction parameter.

Angle

    As for all randomized aspects of the output, you can force a new set of choices by assigning a new Seed parameter value under the Advanced group.

Offset

Angle set to 60° by default.

Amount the angle should be increased by, as the transition progresses. This parameter is only available when End Direction is set to Offset.

Flip Offset

On by default.

On its first use, the transition will only offset the direction by the value of the Offset parameter. When this option is enabled, the offset will be flipped on all subsequent uses.

For example, if the Offset parameter is set to 45˚, on its next use the transition will use an offset of -45˚, and keep alternating between these two values indefinitely.

This parameter is only available when End Direction is set to Offset.

Cube

One image is projected onto a 3D cube, which is rotated to reveal the next image on the adjacent face.

Side

The following options are available:

Controls which side of the cube is revealed as the transition progresses.

Reveal

The following options are available:

The side of the cube that reveals the next image. This parameter is only available when Side is set to use a single side, or when cycling across all possible sides of the cube.

Zoom

Set to -0.1 by default. Only values between -1 and 1 are allowed.

Amount to move the cube away or closer to the viewer as the transition progresses. Negative values push the cube away. Positive values move it closer to the eye.

Rotation

The following options are available:

Controls rotation of the cube along the Z axis, allowing it to tilt to one side or the other with repect to the viewer.

Direction

The following options are available:

When Rotation is set to Round-trip to given angle, this parameter controls if and how the Angle is animated from one image to the next.

Angle

Set to 30° by default.

The maximum angle of tilt reached by the transition.

This parameter is only available when Rotation is set to Round-trip to given angle.

Increment

Angle set to 90° by default.

Rotations

Set to 1 by default. Only values between 1 and 10 are allowed.

Number of full rotations about the Z axis the cube completes during the transition.

This parameter is only available when Rotation is set to Complete a full rotation.

Direction

The following options are available:

Controls the direction in which the cube tilts to perform a full rotation.

Crop to Frame

When enabled, both the outgoing and incoming images are cropped before the cube transition is applied. This allows the Cube transition to be effectively used when the geometry of your media is being animated, such as through Pan and Zoom or randomized transformations.

Defocus Dissolve

Random, square regions of one image animate to reveal the next.

Type

The following options are available:

Blur

Set to 50% by default.

Amount of blurring, relative to the dimensions of the frame.

Overexposure

Set to 25% by default.

Maximum amount of over-exposure, reached halfway through the transition.

Direction

Split Amount

Amount to shift the selected channels away from their normal location to simulate chromatic aberration. The value is expressed relatively to the dimensions of the frame, where 1 stands for 100%. Negative values generate an offset in the opposite direction of positive values.

Doorway

A 3D transition that splits and opens one image to reveal the next, as if by moving the object closer to the viewer and having it come to focus.

Action

Orientation

The following options are available:

Controls whether the door panels swing left and right, or up and down.

Reflections

Off by default.

Controls whether reflections are visible and projected onto the simulated floor.

Panel

The following options are available:

Controls whether one or both panels are swung to reveal the next image.

Clearance

Set to 75% by default.

Controls the amount of space that separates each panel as it swings.

This amount is specified relative to the dimensions of the frame.

Start opacity

Set to 0% by default.

Defines the initial opacity of the next image, which fades in from this value as it gets revealed.

Start scale

Set to 20% by default.

Defines the initial scale of the next image, increased up to its final scale as it gets revealed.

Angle

Set to by default.

Value must be at least .

Defines the initial rotation of the image. The image is rotated back to its final angle as it gets revealed.

Angle Animation

The following options are available:

Controls whether the image being revealed is animated from a given angle as it gets revealed.

Min Angle

Set to -90° by default.

Defines the lower bound of the range the random angle can be choosed from.

This parameter is only available when Angle Animation is set to Randomize.

Max Angle

Set to 90° by default.

Defines the upper bound of the range the random angle can be choosed from.

This parameter is only available when Angle Animation is set to Randomize.

Type

The following options are available:

Controls the effect used to display the next image as out-of-focus.

Blur

Set to 20% by default.

Controls how out-of-focus the next image should be when the transition begins.

As the transition progresses, the image is brought into focus.

Fade to Color

A transition that fades the current image to the given color, revealing the next image by fading it in.

Color

Set to
black with 50% alpha by default.

The outgoing image fades to this color, while the incoming image fades in from the same color.

The opacity allows you to control the visibility of the background.

Hold

Set to 50% by default.

Controls how long the transition holds on to the selected color before fading in the next image in the sequence.

Midpoint

Set to 0.5 by default.

The slider is limited to values between 0 and 1 but you can type values between -∞ and +∞ by clicking on the current value in the inspector and typing the desired value in. Some video applications also allow you to click and drag the value beyond the range accessible through the slider.

Filmic Dissolve

A variant of the cross dissolve transition that favors bright or dim colors in the process of fading from one image to the next. The artistic intent behind this process is to cause certain color ranges to be linger in the output longer than others.

Fade

The following options are available:

Controls whether the current image fades in or out to reveal the next.

Select

The following options are available:

Controls which pixels are dissolved first and last by the transition. Unlike a basic cross dissolve, this transition computes the luminance of each pixel (brightness) to decide when the dissolve at that location should begin.

Luminance

Set to 0% by default.

Allows you to select which pixels should be dissolved first by specifying their brightness. The range is further defined be Softness parameter.

Available only when Select is set to Custom Luminance.

Softness

Set to 25% by default.

Allows you to widen the range of pixels that should be dissolved first. The location of the range is defined by the Luminance parameter.

Available only when Select is set to Custom Luminance.

Flip

A 3D transition that flips one image to reveal the next, on the other side.

Direction

The following options are available:

Controls if and how the direction changes at every use of the transition.

Start Direction

The following options are available:

Initial direction in which the current image is flipped to reveal the next.

The actual direction used by the transition is a dependent on the Direction parameter too, since it allows for changes to the direction over time.

Light Attenuation

Set to 50% by default.

Controls whether the image becomes darker as it flips, to simulate the 3D effect of a plane pointing away from a light source.

Scale

Set to 50% by default.

Controls the minimum scale reached by the image as it flips.

Scaling the image down simulates the effect of moving the image away from the viewer, in 3D space.

Genie

A transition that squeezes and moves images in and out of the frame, an effect which closely resembles the animation of a window being minimized on the computer screen.

Overlap animations

Set to 50% by default.

Controls whether the animation that moves one image out of the frame happens simultaneously with the animation that moves the next image into the frame.

Squeeze Start

Set to 10% by default.

Controls the point in time when the image begins to be squeeze, relative to the overall progress of the animation.

Increase this value to delay the moment when the squeeze distortion is applied.

Squeeze Amount

Set to 85% by default.

Controls how much an image is squeezed by the transition.

Offscreen Direction

The following options are available:

Controls how the outgoing image direction changes over multiple uses of the transition.

Angle

Set to by default.

Direction in which the current image disappears.

Increment

Angle set to 90° by default.

Angle that the direction in which the current image disappears should increment at each use of the transition.

This parameter is only available when Offscreen Direction is set to Increase.

Onscreen Direction

The following options are available:

Controls how the incoming image direction changes over multiple uses of the transition.

Offset

Angle added to the offscreen direction to determine the direction taken by the incoming image to appear onscreen.

Flip Offset

A transition that applies a glow effect to one image and dissolves to the next as the effect peaks.

Controls how much detail from the original image is preserved in the conversion to an equivalent halftone pattern.

Ink Color

Controls the distance between each disc used to reveal the next image, as well as its shape relative to the origin of the effect.

Split Channels

A basic yet beautiful transition that moves one image out of the frame as it moves the next image into the frame.

Overlap

Controls whether the outgoing and incoming images are animated in synch.

Twist Angle

Set to 20° by default.

The output is distorted along the given angle as the transition reaches its peak. The distortion is undone when the transition reaches its end.

Twist Direction

The following options are available:

Controls whether the distortion angle changes from one use of the transition to the next.

Split Channels

The following options are available:

Controls which channels are shifted to simulate chromatic aberration.

Radial Dissolve

A transition that applies radial blur (sometimes called spin blur) to one or separate channels. The origin can be fixed or animated through a set of options that include a wipe-like movement across the frame.

Channels

Determines whether the radial blur is applied with the same amount to all color channels, or whether separate sliders let you control the amount for the red, green and blue channels.

Amount

Amount of blurring, which may be separately specified for the three color channels.

Beware that setting a high radial blur amount may perform poorly on lower-end graphics cards.

Location

The following options are available:

Custom

When Location is set to Custom, this is the first location that defines the center of the radial blur.

2nd Custom Location

When enabled, you can specify a second custom location. The radial blur then moves from one location to the next, as it transitions from one image or video to the next.

Incoming

When Location is set to Custom and the 2nd Custom Location is enabled, this parameter specifies the final location of the radial blur, reached at the end of the transition.

Random X

When Location is set to Random, this parameter defines the range within the frame where the random X coordinate is picked from. At the default range of 20% to 80%, the random location is picked with the region of the frame that excludes 20% from both its left and right margins.

Random Y

When Location is set to Random, this parameter defines the range within the frame where the random Y coordinate is picked from. At the default range of 10% to 90%, the random location is picked with the region of the frame that excludes 10% from both its bottom and top margins.

2nd Random Location

When Location is set to Random and this parameter is enabled, the effect picks two locations at random, within the given range. The transition starts the radial blur at the first random location, and progresses to the second location as it reaches the end of the transition.

Corner

Specifies the corner of the frame where the radial blur is centered.

Corner Progression

The following options are available:

2nd Opposite Corner

When enabled, the animation moves from the selected corner to its opposite.

Start Direction

When Location is set to Wipe, this parameter determines the initial direction of the wipe.

End Direction

When Location is set to Wipe, this parameter determines the final direction of the wipe.

Direction Increment

When Location is set to Wipe, this parameter determines how much the Start and End angles are increased at each image or photo. This helps to create variation, so that the viewer isn’t presented with an identical transition for all images and videos in the sequence.

When a word would exceed the maximum width allowed for a line, it is wrapped to a new line.

Horizontal Anchor

Relative horizontal position of the title within its enclosure.

A value of 25% means that whatever text is generated, it is centered at 1/4 distance from the edge of the image or screen, depending on whether Titles is set to Embeddded or Floating.

Vertical Anchor

Set to 50% by default.

Relative vertical position of the title within its enclosure.

A value of 50% means that whatever text is generated, it is centered at 1/2 distance from the edge of the image or screen, depending on whether Titles is set to Embeddded or Floating.

Kerning Adjustment

Set to 0 by default. Only values between -1 and 1 are allowed.

Controls spacing between each glyph in the output.

Mask

The following options are available:

Controls whether the title is used to crop the image.

Blend Mode

The following options are available:

Blend mode used to composite the title over its background.

Unavailable when Mask is set to In or Out since in that case the title is not visible in the output.

Drop Shadow

Enable a drop shadow behind each title.

Please note that the current Blend Mode may affect your ability to see the drop shadow applied to the text.

Stretch X

Stretches the output horizontally, after any rotations have been applied, so as to be able to create light tunnel-style effects.

Stretch Y

Angle

Starting angle of the output, which changes over time when the Angle Speed parameter is non-zero.

Angle Speed

Controls the speed and direction (clockwise or counter-clockwise) at which the Angle animates over time.

Animation Speed

Controls the speed at which the procedurally-generated smoke animates over time, with respect to the viewer.

Mix (Red/Cyan)

Controls how much red/cyan color is mixed in. Note that this parameter is only meaninful when Adaptive Color is less than 100%, in which case it is recommended that this parameter is set to 0.

Mix (Blue/Yellow)

Controls how much blue/yellow color is mixed in. Note that this parameter is only meaninful when Adaptive Color is less than 100%, in which case it is recommended that this parameter is set to 0.

Mix (Green/Purple)

Controls how much green/purple color is mixed in. Note that this parameter is only meaninful when Adaptive Color is less than 100%, in which case it is recommended that this parameter is set to 0.

Motion Blur

Motion Blur

Enables motion blur at different quality settings. The higher the quality, the more samples are used. Multiple samples are blended together to produce a single frame of output.

Shutter Angle and Offset

The Shutter Angle slider controls the size (aperture) of the shutter used to simulate motion blur. The size of the shutter determines how long light is allowed to pass through the lens. The angle is set to 90° by default. A shutter angle of 360° means that samples are collected for the entire duration of the frame.
Setting a value of zero means that you want the shutter to collect light only once, which is equivalent to turning motion blur off.

The Shutter Offset slider controls the moment in time when the shutter opens and closes, relative to the duration of the frame. The offset is set to 0 by default. An offset of zero means the shutter is perfectly centered over the moment in time when the frame occurs. The shutter is therefore open an equal amount of time before and after the current frame occurs.

The Shutter Angle and Shutter Offset parameters are only available when motion blur is enabled.

Advanced

Resolution

The following options are available:

Limit the resolution of images as they are loaded from disk to avoid extremely slow renders on Macs with limited amounts of video memory.

Build In Transition

The following options are available:

Controls which transition to use at the very start of the image sequence animation.

Because this parameter affects the transition into the first image, it is only available if the Build In option under Transitions is on.

On its default value of Inherited, the transition used at the beginning of the animation is dependent on the value selected in the Transition parameter. In other words, it could be randomized, or it could be the same transition style used for all images.

The slider is limited to values between 0 and 60 but you can type values between 0 and +∞ by clicking on the current value in the inspector and typing the desired value in. Some video applications also allow you to click and drag the value beyond the range accessible through the slider.

Seconds to wait before the photo sequence animation begins.

This parameter is only available when the Build In option is on, since it controls when the transition to the first image in the sequence begins.

Loop

Off by default.

This parameter controls whether the animation starts again from the first image once the last image has been reached.

Seed

A number that controls random aspects of the effect.

Click the New button to assign a new seed value. When the seed value is changed, the effect uses a different random sequence to produce a different output.

Edit the existing value to manually assign a seed number. This may help you replicate a particular sequence of random events. In Final Cut Pro and Motion, hold down the Option ⌥ key to access the Edit button in the inspector.

Please note that this parameter does not affect blend modes. If you have specifically assigned Perceptual Add as the blend mode for your drop shadow, it will remain so even if you set this parameter to Traditional.
