Final Cut Pro 12.3 Regression Affects Object Tracking, Face Detection and Other Features

Final Cut Pro 12.3, the most recent version available via the Mac App Store, regrettably includes a regression that affects all third-party plugins that perform frame-by-frame video analysis.

What is Video Analysis?

Many popular features in our plug-ins, such as object tracking, face detection, or the new AI-based Depth estimation found in FxFactory Pro 7, rely on video analysis.

During this process, Final Cut Pro feeds every frame in the underlying clip to our plug-ins.

Regrettably, Final Cut Pro 12.3 fails to free up memory immediately after each frame has been processed, causing its memory footprint to grow quickly.

What are the Side Effects?

On most systems, processing more than a few seconds of HD or 4K video will exhaust all memory on the system, causing your Mac to become unresponsive or, in some cases, causing Final Cut Pro to crash.

Should your video analysis complete despite the increased memory consumption, Final Cut Pro will then relinquish all video frames at once and return the system back to its normal state.

Are There Any Solutions?

This problem affects a large number of products on our catalog, too large to be mentioned individually. In some cases, it may be possible to work around the issue by breaking up a clip and performing analysis on each segment.

In most cases, the only viable solution is to use a previous version of Final Cut Pro, or attempt the same operation in a different video application.

If a plug-in on your timeline is affected, please check if it supports Motion, Premiere Pro, After Effects and DaVinci Resolve. Whenever possible, we recommend that you switch to one of those apps to complete the task, and import the fully-rendered output clip back in Final Cut Pro.

Should the product in question support exclusively Final Cut Pro, the only alternative is downgrading back to Final Cut Pro 12.2 to complete your project.
