Broadcasting Motion with Clarity and Confidence

Ron Wilhelmsen has spent his career turning motion into meaning. Now Senior Designer at WBZ-TV / WSBK-TV / CBS Boston, he’s been creating promos and broadcast graphics for over three decades — from the early days of Quantel Paintbox to the high-velocity timelines of today’s newsroom.

“I fell in love with broadcast design at an incredible time,” says Ron. “I started out as a production assistant at NBC Network News in New York, working on Nightly News with Tom Brokaw and the Today Show. That’s where I first learned how to build graphics. The rest is ancient history.”

Today, after 26 years at CBS News Boston and eight Emmy Awards, Ron continues to shape the station’s visual identity. His work can be seen across nightly newscasts, sports partnerships, and major promotional campaigns — most recently, a high-energy promo package for WBZ News at 8PM, created in collaboration with the Boston Calling music festival and Kiss 108.

Bold Text for Bold Stories

For these promos, Ron needed type that could move as fast and as fluidly as the stories they support. His solution: Yanobox Motype, a text animation plugin available through FxFactory.

“Motype has been a gamechanger for me and now my go-to for animated text options,” says Ron. “It’s extremely intuitive — it can be as simple or as complex as you want. That flexibility is critical when I’ve got about five hours from concept to finished piece.”

Motype gives Ron the creative firepower to integrate bold text, clean transitions, and a dynamic look that stands out on air and online.

Fast turnarounds, flawless results

Working in Adobe After Effects, Ron delivers polished graphics on tight deadlines. “The team usually gives me a rough cut with placeholders — and the clock is ticking. But tools like Motype let me execute my ideas without having to sacrifice design quality or speed.”

Ron’s passion for motion design is just as strong as it was on his first day in the newsroom. And with FxFactory plugins in his workflow, he’s keeping CBS News Boston moving forward — one frame at a time.
