Nodes Sets the Tone for Twitter Keynote

Mat Hale from imag8nineteen was kind enough to share his thoughts on Yanobox Nodes and how the plugin was used on their latest project, the visuals for the Twitter Flight 2015 Developer Conference Keynote.

What was the goal of the project?

We created the concept, design and video intro animation for the 2015 Twitter Conference. The goal was to engage the crowd immediately and start the conference off with visual excitement.

How did you get involved with this project?

imag8nineteen collaborated closely with NVE: The Experience Agency to design and animate the custom video. Kyle Ruebsamen, vice president of experiential strategy, clearly outlined what the client wanted for the conference and based on these idea requirements our team created a high energy visual that set the tone for the entire conference.

What tools / workflow did you use and how much time did you have?

We presented high-level ideas to NVE. Once we received approval, we concepted on a whiteboard first with an overall storyboard, which helped to define a final visual concept to present to NVE. After approval on the storyboard, we then designed look and feel boards using Nodes. We had a total of 5 days from concept to delivery with a working resolution of 4800 x 1920. Twitter’s internal department handled audio for this project. To present concepts, complete all storyboarding, and create final products we used Adobe After Effects, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Cinema 4D R17 and Yanobox Nodes.

What shots did you use Nodes for in the project?

Almost the entire Twitter opening video was completed using Nodes. This was our team’s first time using Nodes 2. We took full advantage of utilizing the presets, which eliminated the stress of learning a new plug-in, especially on tight deadlines. We imported 3D OBJ files and then imported AI files for an image list of logos for each node. Animating node connections and sizes helped us create the intro video concept. Twitter’s intention for the intro was to visually illustrate Tweets being generated and happening around the world. We could not have met the tight deadline without an intuitive plug-in such as Nodes 2.

How long have you been doing this?

Located in Los Angeles, imag8nineteen was founded as a freelance multimedia creative, design and production company. How did you get started in the industry?

I studied traditional animation at Columbia College in Chicago and graduated in 1997. I began my career in the video game industry, first designing pinball machines and then onto coin-op arcade. Shortly thereafter, I made the transition to video game consoles, working for companies such as Midway Games, 3do, Activision and Electronic Arts. While in video games, I started as a 2D/3D generalist working my way to Lead Artist and finally Art Director of Outsourcing. During my time in college in the late nineties, I was asked to help set up AV equipment at an underground warehouse party, and immediately, I was hooked on video art. This led to work throughout the years in this medium. In 2010 I made the decision to pursue video art full time, focusing on my design studio, imag8nineteen.
